By Road:
The best option is to travel from Delhi by road. Delhi to Haridwar is 229 kms. The climb from Haridwar to Joshimath is 257 kms. The ascent to Joshimath winds through Rishikesh, Srinagar, Karnaprayag and Chamoli.

By Train:
Nearest Railway Station is Rishikesh / Haridwar which is connected as under; From Delhi by Shatabdi Exp. From Bombay by Bandra-Dehradun Exp. From Calcutta by Howrah-Doon Exp.From Lucknow by Gorakhanath/Doon Exp. Rishikesh to Joshimath by road. Road from Joshimath to Badrinath opens Mid May-mid to November.

By Air:
Nearest Airport is Jolly Grant near Dehradun (280 Km). Very soon a new airport at Gauchar (92 Km.) will be operational in year 2005.

Tourist Destinations in Uttaranchal:

Mussoorie: Mussoorie is one of the popular hill stations in Garhwal region of Uttaranchal, towering over the Doon valley. It is also known as the Queen of Hill Stations. Mountain mist, old architecture, the riot of flowers and streams of Mussoorie will take you to an era of romance. This Garhwal town is famous for its scenic beauty. Mussoorie is 290 km from Delhi and 35 km from Dehradun. There are regular flights from New Delhi to the Doon Valley (50 minutes). From the Jolly Grant airport, taxis and buses take you to Dehradun from where you can go to Mussoorie (2¼ hours, 60 km). The trains, buses and taxis are also available from Delhi and Dehradun.

Rishikesh: At the foothills of the Himalayas along the banks of the sacred river Ganges, lies the town of Rishikesh. Rishikesh is home to many major Indian ashrams, including Vivekenanda, Sivananda, Osho and Bihar school of yoga. This place in Garhwal region is a good place to experience classical Indian yoga. The nearest airport is Dehradun from where a number of buses ply to Rishikesh. Rishikesh is well connected by rail via Haridwar (24 km) to Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Dehradun and other tourist cities. Rishikesh is also connected by bus via Haridwar with Agra, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kullu, Manali, and Shimla.

Haridwar: Haridwar is among the seven sacred cities of India. Essentially a religious centre, which holds promise of salvation for devotees, Haridwar, is also a centre of herbal medicine, and traditional studies at Gurukul Kangri. There are many places of scenic beauty on the outskirts of the town. The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant in Dehradun. Regular buses and trains are available from Delhi to Dehradun from where buses can be taken to Haridwar.

Nainital: The lake town of Nainital is the largest hill settlement in the Kumaon region of Himalayas. The height of 1,300 metres makes Nainital a beautiful hill station loaded with river valleys, alongside terraced farms, lush green alpine forests and over mountain ridges.The nearest airport Pantnagar is 71 km away from Nainital. Regular flights, buses and taxis to Nainital are available from Delhi. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam (35 km). The trains connect Nainital to Delhi, Agra, Bareilly and Lucknow. Taxis and buses are also available from Kathgodam, Bareilly, Almora and Ranikhet to Nainital.

Kausani: A 300km wide view curves across the Himalayas from Kausani, a breathtakingly beautiful hill station in the Kumaon Hills. The eye sweeps past dense forests and glowing hills lit up by the setting sun. It is 120 km from Nainital and 410 km from Delhi. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam (142 kms). Kausani is well connected by road to all nearby towns like Kathgodam (142 kms), Almora (53 kms), Ranikhet (79 kms).

Mukteshwar: Nestled in the Kumaon hills of Uttaranchal, Mukteshwar commands a dramatic view of the Himalayas. This little town of red-roofs, wooden window frames and picket fences takes one back to the days of the Raj. Relax with a steaming cup of tea and drink in the majesty of the Annapurna peak. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, at a distance of 72 kms. The road network connects it to Nainital (50 kms) and Haldwani  (49 kms) via Bhimtal.

Ranikhet: In the Kumaon Hills the hill resort of Ranikhet is 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora. Near the hill resort of Ranikhet there are several other places of tourists interest. At around sixty km from Ranikhet is another hill resort of Nainital. It is well connected through road network with Nainital, Almora, Delhi and other tourist places in Uttaranchal.

Bhimtal: Bhimtal is at a distance of just 25 km from Nainital. It is situated at an altitude of 1200 m and makes for an all year round destination. For recreation one can do boating at the lake or explore the surrounding jungle on foot. It can be reached easily by bus from Nainital and Ranikhet.
